Postpartum serum concentration of haptoglobin in cows with fetal membranes retention
AbstractAcute phase proteins (APP), particularly Haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA) and others are good markers of many diseases in cattle because of significant increase of their concentration during inflammation and other health problems. Elevated concentration of positive APP including Hp have been detected during normal periparurient period as well as in various cases of mastitis, endometritis, pneumonia, enteritis, dermatitis digitalis and other diseases. There are not many papers concerning measurement of Hp serum concentration in early postparturient period including measurement on cases of fetal membrane retention (FMR) and monitoring of their therapy. There are two main kinds of therapy for retained fetal membranes: manual method and the conservative one. Leaving placenta or it's parts in cow uterus often leads to increased bacterial growth and progression of local uterine infection as well as other disturbances in reproduction at a later stages. The aim of this study was to assess the concentration of serum haptoglobin in groups of cows with and without FMR in 3rd, 10th and 17th day after calving. The values of serum concentration of Hp were analysed in two problematic groups of cows: one where the retained membranes were manually resolved and another where the retained membranes were left in the uterus as a conservative method of therapy. The mean results in these groups were compared with the mean result of the control group of cows in the same herd undergoing normal delivery. The mean results of haptoglobin serum concentration measured in quoted times after calving were the highest in 3rd day, lower in 10th day and quite low in 17th day. Values of haptoglobin concentration for every individual case were similar in problematic groups of cows but different in control group. Detailed data for concentration of Hp in compared groups of cows are presented in the paper.
