The purpose of the study was an endoscopic evaluation of the influence of Polopiryna S, Piroxicam and Voltaren on canine gastric mucosa. The experiment was performed on 18-12 year-old dogs of different breeds, size and sex. The dogs were divided into three groups: A, B and C and were treated with the following drugs: A) Polopiryna S-0.04/ kg b/w. per day; B) Piroxicam - 0.001/kg b/w. per day; C) Voltaren - 0.0005/ kg b/w. per day. All the drugs were administrated orally once daily over a 2-3 week period. The animals were qualified for the experiment on the basis of a preliminary fiberoscopic observation of gastric mucosa as well as haematological and biochemical blood tests. Gastroscopy was performed three times at one-week intervals with the aid of the Olympus XQ20 paediatric fiberoscope. All the dogs were given dry feed. It was noted that Polopiryna S, Piroxicam and Voltaren had a destructive effect on the gastric mucosa. Ulceration, erosions and inflammation were observed in the animals. The strongest gastropathic effect was observed after the administration of Polopiryna S. Thus, the usage of Polopiryna S, Piroxicam and Voltaren seems unadvisable for canine therapy.
