AbstractThe productivity and health of farm animals, as well as quality of products obtained from them, are affected by two main factors. The first is the genotype of the animal, that is, its functional characteristics, while the second, equally important, is the habitat. Two basic components, which are the conditions of maintenance (welfare) and nutritional factors, must be distinguished defining the breeding environment. Optimal nutrition of farm animals directly determines their growth and development, reproduction, as well as health status. These elements also affect the economics of livestock production and the quality of products obtained from them.
